I’ve been deeply fascinated with the rapidly emerging space of “AI” generated imagery as it emerged into our society. I had been working in the generative space of digital art since I first began exploring digital tools, bending their algorithms to create unexpected results, leveraging feedback loops of digital processes to glitch out software in novel ways. So when neural networks hit the scene I was ready to dive in headfirst and explore this new realm of image creation. In 2022, as image generators began to rapidly progress, I explored the use of these new tools for storytelling, developing a narrative that explored concepts of expeditions into the multiverse through visual imagery generated through the neural network Midjourney. The processes involves initial linguistic prompts, often leveraging specific camera styles and aesthetic time periods and visual descriptions (ex: Taken in 1995 on a disposable camera accidentally). Then images are mixed together by ‘breeding’ them, creating hybrid images that merge composition and aesthetics. Multiple generations of this image mixing and we leave a linguistic space and develop visuals that have been created through a feedback loop of passes through this non-linguistic pattern recognizing enity we call generative Artificial Intelligence. This processes feels like a kind of divination, of channeling images of another land through the mind of this digital landscape of the neural network latent space. It began to feel like multidimensinal photography, and the resulting narrative that drives these images explores that theme of parallel reality exploration.
